2nd Grade - Tomatoes!

The Canyon WIP Blog

CANYON GARDENING

starring the Gardening Guys!
The Guy on the Left, the Guy in the Middle, and the Guy too far on the Right!

If you read the facts you'll note that tomatoes are thought to have originated in Peru.

Foolish scientists!
Our tomatoes came straight from the
WHOLE FOODS on Wilshire
as part on their ongoing grant to The Garden Guys!
Thank you
WHOLE FOODS for helping with:

The Tomato Lesson
::-::-::-::-::-::
SECRET SECRET SECRET
Department of Parent Involvement = NO Kids Allowed!
We know how smart you parents are, so we know
if you've read our Tomato Facts you've see our error.
(Did you find it? Go ahead, look again.)

(Ahh, now you've found it haven't you?
So you can skip the following since you already know it.)

(I said, SKIP THE NEXT PART, Mr Knowitall!)

(Not so smart after all, eh? Okay, read on...)

Apparently there are "thousands of varieties of tomatoes" ...and one.
Since 2012 there have been BLUE Tomatoes,
created through hybridization (not GMO).
We regret the error (I blame my colleagues!), and we will correct ourselves.

But WAIT! Yes, Wait!

Okay, you can start reading again.
At our next lesson we will ask the children if they know about our mistake!
And YOUR child can help correct us!
We will know if you read the blog when we ask.

And we have ways of making you read the blog...

END OF SECRET PART
(Pretend nothing happened)

::-::-::-::-::-::-::-::

There were 2 parts to this week's lesson.
We made a sun dried tomato pesto.

The other part you can try at home:

Sun dried tomatoes!

Last year at Canyon we tried to make sun dried tomatoes,
but the Santa Monica marine layer added too much moisture,
and our sun dried tomatoes
became "fungi" tomatoes!

The real world:
And our brand new reality show:
Overhead with the Gardening Guys!

"Is that the best you can stir a pot?"
"It's hard when I have to make certain you're adding your ingredients correctly."

Another day at Gardening with the "Fun Guy" brothers.

Hey YOU! Leave those tomatoes alone!
They're for the kids!

"Okay. Drop your left, and get ready with your right. When your opponent comes in you'll have to twist while dropping and come up with a hard right!"
Thanks to all parent volunteers for adding their expertise to the lesson!

"I dropped my left, twisted, and I'm coming in with my right."
It works! Who says eating isn't a thinking man's sport?

All done!

The best thing about volunteering!

  1. ATTENTION!!! I believe the facts are correct and your correction needs a correction.

Blue tomatoes, also referred to as purple tomatoes, are tomatoes that have been bred to produce high levels of anthocyanins, a class of pigments responsible for the blue and purple colours of many fruits, including blueberries, blackberries and chokeberries. Some of these tomatoes have been commercialized under the names "Indigo Rose" and "SunBlack".

It is true that in 2012, Oregon State University produced blue tomatoes by crossing pollinating wild varieties and domestic breeds however those tomatoes grown only get their "blue" color (which isn't a true blue) if they are in direct sunlight. The shaded areas are green when unripe and red when ripe.

All in all these blue tomatoes you speak of are actually purple and black in color not blue.

    1. "Believing" facts are correct is not the standard we use here at Gardening Guys Global, Inc. ("G-g-ginc" for short). At G-g-ginc we pride ourselves on hard scientific PROOF, such as "the Google" and "the Wiki."
If believing was all it took to make a fact, then I would be on Us's 50 Most Sexy List.

  2. The Tomato Color Wars erupted at the beginning of the 20th C. over the controversy of whether blue tomatoes were "true blue" or merely a "shade" of blue. Though it may seem foolish to us today, at the time the "Color Separatists" thought their arguments were a very serious matter. Families fought, children were removed from schools so that they could be taught from non-blue textbooks. The Separatists soon evolved into the Tomato Terrorists. But ignoring reality didn't make it so and today we accept that "blue tomatoes" exist, and also that all colors exist on a continuum of shades.
When time travel first became commercially available in the 22nd C. one of the first efforts was to avoid the Big Blue Battle through prior mental augmentation. Sadly, it was soon discovered that many of the Separatists suffered from a genetic dysfunction, corrected through a simple operation, the tobotomy.
