Milkweed and Monarchs

STUDENT EDITION

Today's class was created and presented by

MADDIE ROBINS

This week first graders did not learn about

growing food or its preparation.

 Instead, they planted milkweed

for monarch butterflies.

They also created simple sponge feeders to attract butterflies.

Butterflies, monarchs especially, are important

as pollinators.

Every year millions of monarch butterflies

migrate from Canada to as far south as South America

pollinating plants along their way.

Milkweed is very important to the monarchs

because it's where they lay their eggs.

Milkweed leaves are the only food monarch caterpillars eat.

The increased use of weed killers in agriculture

has decreased wild milkweed, which has led

to a decrease in monarchs.

Fewer monarchs could mean fewer crops.
