Canyon Gardening is off to a great start this year with fabulous Parent Donations (Our blender used in today's lesson is just one of the donations received), and an ongoing store grant from WHOLE FOODS on Wilshire. We want to give a BIG thank you to both these sources, helping the Garden Guys bring gardening to Canyon for the 2015-2016 year!

Did you know the potassium in lemons can help you think?

When we got lemons for today's lesson Sean asked Jerry what we could do with them.
"So life has given us lemons? Maybe we sell the lemons and with the money we can buy a cold soda, or flavored ice...?" Jerry screwed up his face in thought.
"You're full of ...ideas, Jerry," said Sean, "but why don't we cut out the middleman and make the soda and ice ourselves!"
"...Yeah, but with what?" asked Jerry.

The LEMON LESSON

"Kids, Today we're having lemons 2 ways. THIS way."
"...And THIS way!"

Jerry laid down the facts about lemons.
"Lemon Tree very pretty/ And the lemon flower is sweet..."
Jerry thought he was receiving a standing ovation,
but it was just everyone jumping up to run out of earshot.

First we made Lemon Soda
The recipe is simple:
1.) Lemon Juice
2.) ??secret ingredient??
3.) Soda Water
4.) Sweeten to taste
5.) Add Ice
(if you're using honey add the honey before adding the ice, so it dissolves better)
Each class chose their own secret ingredient
(either Rosemary or Mint)
>>>  Ask your child which ingredient his or her class chose. <<<

Maria squeezing lemons!

We also made LEMON SORBET
The recipe is just as simple as the lemon soda:
Lemons
Ice
Sweetner
Blended together with a secret ingredient.
Ask you child what they added to the sorbet.
Did they like the sorbet or the soda better?
You can try reversing the secret ingredients at home.

"Sean's letting ME carry the extension cord. It's my favorite tool!"
"You are a tool Jerry. Smile for the photo."

Sean Sez:
"The sour power of the lemon flower
Keeps your brain from being dour."

I wrote a short poem to teach the kids the correct pronunciation of "sorbet."

"In Britain Brits will often let
The word be sounded as sorbet
But in the States as en Francais
The better mot is said sorbet."

I'm working on another poem to teach the proper pronunciation of this one.

Our final shot for today's blog:
