Canyon Gardening is off to a great start this year with fabulous Parent Donations (Our blender used in today's lesson is just one of the donations received), and an ongoing store grant from WHOLE FOODS on Wilshire. We want to give a BIG thank you to both these sources, helping the Garden Guys bring gardening to Canyon for the 2015-2016 year!

The day was hot,
but we were hotter as we rode the thermal drafts to new heights
and seeded new ideas, and seeded seeds, too!
The Parts of a Plant Lesson!
The kids were given a "parts of a plant" coloring page,
but we didn't stop there.
Each child received a snack cup filled with edible plant parts!
The kids all tasted:
Root -- Beet
Stem -- Celery
Fruit -- Avocado
Leaves -- Spinach
Seeds -- Strawberry
and . . .
Flowers!
We brought edible flower petals to class and your child enjoyed colorful yellow and orange flower petals to eat.
1.) Hand out papers & "snacks."
2.) Everyone writes their names on...
3.) "Hey! Hey! Look over here! Hey!
"Have it your way, look over there.
"Sean, I got them in the palm of my hand!"
A class with a handout and plant parts to eat!?
What a great class! It's perfect!
But that's not all! Wait right there. Take a seat, because--
We doubled the enjoyment and made a frozen Plant Parts Smoothie!
Whew! What a class.
They learned about the parts of a plant.
They actually tasted the different parts of a plant.
....Including flower petals!
And they all enjoyed a healthy and nutritious frozen smoothie on a hot summer day.
I guess day is done, and time to move on.
...But WAIT!
That's not all! There's more to come!
They need to SEE where plants come from!
They need to PLANT!
And seeds were sown.
Parent Volunteers stood in rows waiting to help out!
Ha, ha. Rows.
"Seeds I sow in three neat rows
Grow leaves above and roots below"
Alex and Miguel, parent volunteers providing much needed "prep," the backbone of every lesson. Some people think the Sean & Jerry characters were based on the real life parents, Alex and Miguel.
Due to contractual aspects we can't speak to those rumors.
"I'm just saying, if the seeds are alive, why are we burying them?
There's something creepy about it if you ask me."
Sean Sez:
"Plant parts can impart a healthy start to a growing heart."
"If lemons make you smart what's this one doing in kindergarten?
It should know it's supposed to be in the 1st grade lesson!"
It should know it's supposed to be in the 1st grade lesson!"
