2nd Grade - Composting.

CANYON GARDENING

starring the Gardening Guys

Shining Students of Second Grade!

Over the long, hot summer the Canyon Gardens fell into the neglect of disrepair.

Leaves dried up and hung from branches like forgotten tears of love lost.
Our lettuce languished, potatoes pooped, and berries became bare and brittle bushes of bleakness.

...BEWARE the Pale Horse of DEATH!!!

"We are the lords of our garden," mused Sean. "What shall we do with these empty husks, like souls forgotten?"

"Compost class?" suggested Jerry from his unchartered depths of reverie.
"Yes, we shall come and compost," decided Sean.
And so it was.

The Compost Class

With their work cut out for them Sean and Jerry didn't cut out, but got right to work.

The garden area was prepped (with a BIG thanks to 3rd grader, Vincent's mom, Maria!)

:::  :::  THANKS MARIA!  :::  :::

"Glamour in the Dirt"
"These heavy bags of rich dark dirt make my muscles strain and hurt," poetized Jerry.
"I lift the bags with banded arms for I am young and feel no harm," riposted Sean.

The compost lesson was spread upon the desks and the bits of information were broken down and absorbed by the students.

Maria did a dramatic reading of what is perhaps the world's greatest compost poem,

"The World's Greatest Compost Poem"

Afterward we challenged students with Sean's Compost Word Search.
Even the worms joined in the search!
(Who knew composting is so much fun?)

And PRIZES were awarded!

Then we introduced trees to the classes.
A banana tree, dragon fruit and passion fruit.

Each class planted it's own tree in the garden!
Ask your student which tree their class planted.

Sean sez:
"The squirming worm aerates the berm and helps the plants grow tall and firm."

For a special Show and Tell, Sean shared his worm collection!

Featuring ...LITTLE SEAN!
                                                        He looks just like dad!

Sean and Jerry, helping the plants grow big and tall.
"Grow tall! Like this!"
"This is hard work, right Jerry?
...Jerry?"

                   Mrs Harris' new Banana Tree!

                        Giving it a good watering.

"Where are the bananas?"
